AAC Consultant

The AAC Consultant works within Mastery charter schools to assist in identifying alternative methods of communication for children with disabilities and supports the home school's SLP and IEP team in implementing strategies to support communication development for children with severe speech impairment.


  • Upholds the mission, vision, and values of CORA Services, which includes valuing all individuals, supporting the individual's potential for growth, and enhancing a programmatic service system approach.
  • Establishes consistent referral system across schools and providers
  • Accepts and reviews referrals in accordance with established procedures
  • Schedules and completes AAC assessments with student's IEP team in a timely manner
  • Uses appropriate data gathering procedures and strategies to conduct a needs-based assessment utilizing a team approach and based on the student's customary environments or settings.
  • Determines AAC needs as part of a comprehensive assessment
  • Prepares written reports as required
  • Consult with the students' team to provide strategies to for optimizing students' communication skills throughout the students' day.
  • Work with other SLPs as needed to determine students' AAC needs and how those needs can be better addressed in speech therapy sessions.
  • Troubleshoot AAC device issues and assist SLPs and teachers with programming, use, etc. of these devices
  • Train members of the students' team on the Evidence Based Practices used in order for the child to be successful with AAC. Trainings can include live, virtual, or in- person, as well as pre-recorded.
  • Submit required documentation in order to obtain a device through insurance if the family and team are in agreement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Educational Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology
  • PA Speech Language Pathology License
  • PA Teaching/ Ed Specialist Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • NJ Teaching Certification (or willingness to obtain)

Qualified candidates should possess:

  • Knowledge of AAC options and general AAC device use/ programming/ maintenance/ troubleshooting
  • Ability to provide individualized coaching/ consultation based on each child/ SLP/ IEP team's unique situation
  • Experience with obtaining AAC devices for students through schools, medical insurance, or other funding sources
  • Willingness to continue learning about AAC, gaining additional expertise and staying current on latest technology and best practices
  • Strong communication, organization, and scheduling skills
  • Passion for working with children with complex communication needs
